Legal & Housing Intern(s)

Organization

Founded in 2013, The Waterfront Project, Inc. (WFP), is a legal help center and HUD-approved counseling agency. WFP provides free civil legal representation, rental housing counseling, and financial counseling to Hudson County residents who are asset-limited, income-constrained, homeless, or otherwise disenfranchised. Currently, WFP’s primary focus is pursuing creative strategies to allow low- and moderate-income people to stay in their homes and communities, especially in neighborhoods experiencing rapid development and gentrification.

Internship Program

The WFP Internship Program provides students who are interested in law and social justice with an exciting, hands-on experience at an innovative nonprofit.  Though our organization is growing rapidly, it is still all hands-on deck at WFP, allowing our interns to play an integral role in our work.

Interns work alongside our Executive Director, Housing Counselors, and Staff Attorneys.  They support our client-focused work as well as our nonprofit administrative functions.

Legal and Housing Counseling Support

  • Create informational pamphlets and PowerPoint presentations for use at tenant workshops

Requirements

The Waterfront Project is looking for three undergraduate, graduate or law students.  Applicants should have a commitment to social justice and an interest in law, nonprofit management, or marketing.

Also necessary are excellent verbal and written communication skills, a positive attitude, a healthy sense of humor, and a working knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.

We are happy to cooperate with students and their schools to secure class credits.

Equal Opportunity Employer

WFP is an equal opportunity employer and will not discriminate against any employee or applicant on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, pregnancy or veteran status.

We encourage people of color, women, veterans, people living with disabilities, older people, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people to apply.

Do you feel like you do not meet every single requirement? Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single qualification. At The Waterfront Project, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace, so if you are excited about this role but your past experience does not align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
